A group discussion around a table with residents

North Tandridge Health and Wellbeing Network

Our network

Over the past year, our network has worked to identify and collectively action many areas to improve health and wellbeing in the local area.

Bringing together local residents and community partners who collectively wish to improve the health and wellbeing of local people, and the delivery of local NHS services.

Our aim is to:

  • Meet with other local people and organisations who are creating health in their area
  • Celebrate all that is going on within the local community
  • Take stock of how relationships between local people, local organisations and the NHS are changing and developing
  • Reflect on local experience of NHS services
  • Shape a collective vision to build upon.

Below is a selection of the North Tandridge Neighbourhood highlights.

  1. Community feedback: Westway Community Hub – The Westway centre is looking to promote activities offered and increase footfall.
Latest update: Following a successful Lottery Fund Bid the Community of North Tandridge are working together to help support additional usage and uptake of activity at the Westway Centre. The site already hosts a wide range of community organisations including dance classes, health and fitness, cooking, Tai Chi etc. Following our most recent meeting Employment Support services and social prescribing services are now looking to be co-located at the Westway.
  2. Community feedback: Lack of engagement and support from local commercial businesses to direct residents of Caterham.
Latest update: We worked with local Parish Councillors to identify capital funding opportunities for equipment, Westway centre benefited from community projects with partner organisation – This is an ongoing piece of work, and we are aiming to make some connections with The Caterham BID to link local businesses to local communities.
  3. Community feedback: Request for more activities for Children and Young People.
Latest update: North Tandridge have linked with Children and Young People's services to support a recent project that has been undertaken assessing what young people would like to see in their local communities. Freedom Leisure has been working with pupils at De Stafford school to provide additional activities that students – especially girls, would like to take part in. The feedback from this exercise will be shared with the Children’s and Young people team to add to their service review. As a result of the feedback from pupils Freedom Leisure has added some additional classes to their timetable including Girls only boxing and spin classes. The value from the partnership working that has come about due to the Network Meetings – understanding roles and responsibilities of many Voluntary Service Organisations and charities has made problem solving of issues arising within our community more joined up.
  4. Community feedback: Representation changes
Latest update: It is with much regret that we have to say goodbye to our clinical lead Dr Richard Wright. After many, many, years serving the residents of Caterham via his day job of a GP with Caterham Valley practice - Richard will be taking well-earned retirement. Richard will continue with his other community commitments so we will still see him in the Westway, but he will no longer be the clinical Lead for the North Tandridge Neighbourhood. Richard was instrumental in setting up the North Tandridge Neighbourhood network and worked closely with us since the start. On behalf of all residents, organisations, charities, individuals, and health and social services, would like to thank Richard for all his hard work. The good news that Dr Mohsin will be taking over the role of the clinical lead for North Tandridge Neighbourhood. Dr Mohsin is a GP at Whyteleafe Surgery and will be joining us at out next meeting.

Below is a selection of the North Tandridge Neighbourhood highlights.

  1. Community feedback: Transport services are a in short supply in Caterham, particularly travel to and from East Surrey Hospital.
Latest update: We linked organisations and residents with East Surrey Rural Transport Services providing digital on demand minibus service for residents. This included popular routes to East Surrey Hospital from Caterham on the hill.
  2. Community feedback: Lack of engagement and support from local commercial businesses to direct residents of Caterham.
Latest update: We worked with local Parish Councillors to identify capital funding opportunities for equipment. Westway centre benefited from community projects with partner organisation - Waitrose to provide updated facilities in the Westway.
  3. Community feedback: Bringing together local community organisations.
Latest update: We supported local organisations to encourage access to open space specifically a spring bulb planting event in Whyteleafe.

Growing Health Together work with The Westway and Freedom Leisure to tackle loneliness and sedentary lifestyles with guided walks, pickleball for over 60s, boxing for Parkinson’s patients and supporting awareness of these activities has been important work.

The value from the partnership working that has come about due to the Network Meetings – understanding roles and responsibilities of many voluntary sector organisations and charities has made problem solving of issues arising within our community more joined up.
  4. Community feedback: Limited resources and activity for children and young people locally.
Latest update: We supported organisations to complete children and young people survey to help identify what young people would like to see in their local community. Supported the continuation of the Friday night project at de Stafford sports centre.

Workshops

We worked with partners to host community-facing workshops during the first quarter of 2023.

The feedback received was of critical importance in informing the development of the neighbourhood model in East Surrey.
